Footprints – for jazz ensemble

Footprints

Footprints was written for the Magela Herrera Afrocuban Quartet and represents one of my first forays into jazz music. Herrera asked that the composers on this concert write in styles similar to her own which captured my imagination. I enjoyed writing and improvising to a son clave and enjoyed the piece even more when Herrera and her ensemble performed it. The score itself is a simple jazz chart with chords and a melody, although I recommended some influences for the drums (“Amor y Control by Rubén Blades) and bass (“Falso Amor” by Willie Rosario). Ultimately I hope to write more music in similar styles because this piece is still a joy to listen to.
